A Moche stirrup spout vessel, representing the crab-god Ai Apaec, god-creator and protector of the Moche, Ai Apaec was the chief deity of the Moche culture. The most feared and adored of all punitive gods, it was also referred to as the ‘headsman’. Ai Apaec was worshipped as the creator god, protector of the Moche, and provider of water, food, and military triumphs. Terracotta, with original paint Northern Peru, Moche cultuure, ca 450 AD afm.
